About Jyutping
Jyutping is a Cantonese romanization scheme published by the Linguistic Society of Hong Kong in 1993. It uses Latin letters and numbers 1–6 for initials, finals, and tones, with no complex diacritics. It is the most widely used standard in education, linguistics, and input methods. Compared to Yale and other systems, Jyutping fits modern typing and is the go-to tool for Cantonese in the digital age.
Cantonese Nine Tones
Cantonese has nine tone categories with six actual pitch values. Tones 7, 8, and 9 are entering tones (codas -p, -t, -k) with pitch values matching tones 1, 3, and 6.
